Game Play – 8/10
The game play was a little blocky at first, but once I started to get the hang of it, it was easy. I did run off a few cliffs and buildings along the way though. One thing that you have to appreciate was the cover system that Rockstar Games included in Grand Theft Auto IV. You don’t just shoot directly at people anymore, in GTA IV you can shoot all over the place at them without looking. This game is also what you call an “Open World” or “Sandbox” game where you can explore a large area without having to load up new areas. One thing that I had to note here was that there is very realistic damage to cars, wherever you hit, there will be a dent. It seems like the damage isn’t programmed to hit in a certain place, but custom for your crash speed and location.
Story – 9/10
The story in GTA IV is the story of Niko Bellic, an immigrant to the US, and way very intriguing and kept me playing through his tale for days on end. I loved getting calls from story characters and being able to choose between answering them or hanging up. There was also a variety of mini-games that kept me occupied for hours such as Bowling, Darts, Billiards, and more.
Graphics – 9/10
The graphics for this game were surprisingly good for its type. I was impressed at how realistic the explosions were and how realistic everything else was. There wasn’t really much of that cheap fading stuff when you look very far away.
Multiplayer – 9.5/10
This game has one of the best multiplayer experiences of all the games that I have ever played. It supports 16 players in one match to explore the entire city and do almost everything that you can in singleplayer, and it supports even more people on the PC version. There is also a vast array of editable settings for your multiplayer game. One thing that makes this great is the large number of game modes; you can goof off with your buddies, fight them, or have them help you out in co-op missions that aren’t related to the story. There is also a ranking system that allows you to get new clothes for your custom character, which will kept me playing until the wee hours.
AI – 7.5/10
I didn’t think the AI in this game was very smart, considering they get in horrible car wrecks by themselves and pull out in front of you. Despite this, they still show up in multiplayer and can take a realistic amount of damage.
Fun Factor – 10/10
I had loads of fun playing GTA IV, goofing off with my friends and hijacking motor scooters. The story absorbed me for long periods of time and I found myself actually enjoying all of the mini-games. This is also one of those games that you will spend hours not doing what you are supposed to do on, because it’s just that fun.
Replay Value – 10/10
I will be playing the multiplayer of this game probably for the entire summer and still finding new things to do. I would recommend this game to anyone that just wants a game to chill out on when you got tired of that one guy kicking your butt on Call of Duty.
TOTAL SCORE – 90%
I just wanted to note that there are hundreds of different kinds of vehicles, and you can drive them all (except planes). There are also radio stations for every genre of music or talk radio that you can get in real life.
