Ramble Time :)

With some of this year’s biggest releases already out and with many more to follow, there is a lot of conversation going on between the dreaded ‘fanboys’. Just to make things worse, these aren’t just any fanboys, they are a completely different breed and have been around since the dawn of modern gaming.

PC Gamers and Console Gamers…

Commence ramble…
The current trend from the so called ‘big time’ developers (such as Crytek and Bethesda) is to create games for the consoles and then ‘port’ them over to PC. Now this is complete and utter bullshit. You are looking at games being created for what is essentially 6-7 year old hardware, something that you could easily recreate with a sub $200 PC.
This makes the PC gamers ‘machine’ or as I like to call mine, Dorothy ;), completely worthless. Developers are not optimising their games for the top end PCs.

There have been a few spanners in this system as of late, the most notable being Crytek’s DX11 and high-res texture patch which makes mincemeat of most high-end system. All be it after a massive community uproar and being 3 months late.

There is also a glimmer of hope in the works after DICE announced that the PC is in fact the lead platform for its upcoming ‘Call of Duty Killer’, Battlefield 3. This leads me onto my next point.

DICE shown all of the trailers for BF3 on a quad SLI beast PC, this means that all of the console fanboys, who usually bask in their sub HD gaming glory, expected to get these sort of graphics on their ‘Ultimate gaming machines’. Cue the release of the Playstation 3 Footage, with its exceptional 800×600 resolution, 2x AA and 30FPS frame rate. The response? Well… let’s just say that console gamers weren’t exactly ejaculating.

Hopefully this event has let it be known to console gamers that PC games are really exceptional when optimized correctly, and hopefully they now realise what we have been put through.

So after reading this, I expect 99% of console boys to cry, “But the Wii 2 is coming out with HD graphics”, Firstly, HD doesn’t necessarily mean the graphics are going to be good, it’s just a resolution. Secondly, the supposed graphics chip is going to be equivalent to a HD4870, which is about 2 or 3 years behind PC gaming and finally, what does these ‘Amazing graphics’ count for when it’s just crappy casual games aimed at people who can barely use their TV remote.

So, us PC gamers are thinking, “Well, now that the consoles are going to start coming through with graphics aimed at this century, maybe we will actually have DX11 ports and a massive leap in graphics”. Well no, because the two companies who would actually be able to bring a console to market that can compete with a gaming PC have decided to go the casual route and have stated that their consoles are only just past the halfway point. Great, so we are truly left in graphics limbo.

Rant over! What do you think?

The only thing keeping me from building a gaming PC is the difference between PC and PS3 games graphics is so small. Their is only a handful of games that actually take advantage of the expensive hardware.

Not everyone is on one specific side. I respect both methods of gaming equally and the only reason that I don't also play on the PC also it because of money. I'm glad the PC gamers got a win for this one.
