New Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War III (3) Details

Get rid of that GFWL crap for starters

Another of my favourite strategy game franchises has today been detailed.
Dawn of War III has been known to be planned and in production for some time now. But today, some new details emerged, giving some insight into the release window and changes in gameplay.

The first of the few new game mechanics revealed was that DoW III will allow gamers to create their own custom armies. This comes as a sort of “progression” of what we have seen in Retribution, with the growth and customization that you can provide through the base game as well as DLC. Personally, I think that implemented correctly this could move the RTS genre into new depths. I’m thinking maybe a real time strategy version of Total War/Civilization based in the Warhammer world, would be fascinating!

Secondly, the base building will be back. This gives me a huge sigh of relief. Without the base building the game seemed very “dungeon crawler like”. You didn’t feel like you were in a strategy game. The return of the base building(s) would also support my TW/Civ idea.

Lastly, the release window for DoW III is 18 months to 2 years after Retribution. Which puts it at August 2012 to February 2013.

Who’s hyped?
