Over the last few weeks, I’ve been playing the new FIFA 12 demo for PC, being a man from the Great British Isles, I play FIFA and lots of it. So does everybody else, it’s a way of life.
In the past, some people have been quick to say that FIFA is falling behind PES, personally, I’ve never strayed to the dark side of the fake shirts, shoddy graphics, unresponsive controls and fake names that PES throws at you. However, I must admit that FIFA, especially in the 10 and 11 versions, went seriously downhill. Despite being literally the same game, they were just far too “arcady”. You were able to knock the ball about as if it had no weight, and defied the laws of motion.
So, being a great lover and reasonably good player of the game in real-life, I was relieved to see that FIFA has taken that big plunge towards realism. First, we have the total change in defensive mechanism, it has changed from the repetitive tap of a single button whilst your player does all the work, into a complex 2 or 4 button challenge. It isn’t just about tackling anymore, It’s about positioning yourself so that the opposition cannot go where they would like to (e.g. forcing them wide). By standing the opposition up and waiting for the perfect time, you finally get a bit of skill within the defensive system, which is why you hear all the crying from several FIFA forums, they expect the game to be all about attacking.
Speaking of which, the attacking system has taken a considerable change as well. The flow of the game has been slowed down, in order to get people to actually play football, as oppose to the pump and run tactics of yester-year. However, this does have it’s downsides, your teammates just seem to be complete retards. You can pass and move or even run with the ball yourself, yet your teammates decide to move about as much as Berbatov does. When you crank up to the higher difficulties, you are literally forced to either cross or take long shots, through balls seem to have been destroyed.
Finally, the best change to the game this year has to be the player impact engine. It’s been 2 years in the making, millions of people have been waiting… and then been hit in the face by what must be the comedy brigade, courtesy of EA. Maybe I’m being a bit harsh because yes, most of the time it is brilliant. Players react just as they should. Then at other times, they don’t just react differently, they bend time and space in such a way, that Doctor Who couldn’t even sort it out.
The problems vary, but include:
- Players vanishing after an impact
– Players getting rocketed into the air after they land on someone
– Players doing back flips and front flips when they get tackled
Words cannot explain what happens, so I ask you… Please watch.
So, as long as the above is fixed, I can see FIFA going on to big things. That’s all for now!
