How PC Gaming has Evolved over the Years

The entertainment industry is evolving and the same is happening with PC gaming. The world of PC games has gone through an evolution, moving from the age of simple graphics and easy titles we are seeing the age where more advanced graphics and wide array of advanced titles have made PC gaming much exciting and enthralling. This computer game, rather than on an arcade machine or a video game console, is played on a personal computer.

PC games have remained popular since the days it was played on mainframes and minicomputers. The first pioneer computer game is traced in the year 1952 with OXO, while the in 1961 another remarkable game, Spacewar was developed. Talking about the first generation of computer games, they were mainly in the form of interactive fiction or text adventures. By imputing commands through keyboard the player used to communicate with the computer. When personal computers became more powerful by the 1980s, Adventure games started to run. From this time onwards graphics became a vital factor in games. Later on basic graphics combined textual commands gave rise to games like Bard’s Tale, Pool of Radiance, etc. One of the first games meant for microcomputers was Microchess, which was sold to public. With video game market being infested with bad-quality cartridge games, a massive video game crash occurred in 1983 and the demand for personal computers rose remarkably.

With adoption of computer mouse the gaming received a new lift and new releases came out with high-high resolution display with quality graphical interfaces. The King’s Quest series became highly successful that time. Adopting the new interface technologies in its new release Commodore Amiga had a great success. The introduction of FM synthesis sound marked further improvement of PC gaming with much higher sound quality.

The year 1996 saw the success of 3D console and emergence of Microsoft Windows which resulted in revolutionary 3D graphics in PC gaming. The world of PC gaming witnessed increasing levels of realism with advanced CPU technology and quicker graphics accelerators. Modern PC gaming is developing with more complex game engines and the improvements in 3D graphics is evolving PC gaming these days.

The PC game development process also has gone through a big change. While previously the development was performed using standardized tools by one or more developers, today large development teams are developing PC games using the latest technology with budgets of millions of dollars. The evolution of PC gaming has made it possible to experience the real thrill of speed with 3D technology.

Highly advanced and improved computer games require high demand on the hardware of the computer with properly functioning central processing unit (CPU). With introduction of multi-core CPUs in 2005 the PCs now can simultaneously process multiple tasks using more complex graphics, in-game physics and artificial intelligence. In the same way the powerful graphics processing unit (GPU) used by 3D games has made it possible to accelerate the process of making complex scenes. Using multiple GPUs in a single computer the process has resulted in enhanced performance.

Audio is an important part of PC gaming. For providing better audio, sound cards are available which ensure improved 3D audio. While with integrated alternatives such audio enhancement was not possible sound cards have made it possible and that too at lower cost. At the same time, Physics processing units (PPUs) allow more complex exchanges among objects providing much higher degree of control in gaming.  Apart from a keyboard and mouse, the modern gaming devices like headset, joysticks, steering wheels and gamepads have made the games more enjoyable and entertaining.
