First Impression of Guild Wars 2

First Impression of Guild Wars 2

So if you didn’t know it yet, you can pre-purchase Guild Wars 2 and get some really cool benefits for doing so.  You can play any of the open beta weekends between now and the release date (ArenaNet is doing them approximately once per month) and you can start actual gameplay three days before the official release.  You will also get a “Hero’s Ring” which will help any class you decide to play.

I was one of those crazy people who pre-purchased the game just so I could be in the last few betas and get in before everyone who waits to buy this MMORPG.  It was interesting to say the least.  Not all the races were available to play so I went with a human.  It took me a few minutes to figure out how to create my character as a human though, because at first I was a Charr.  Once I did though the rest was easy and fun.  I actually want to keep my character for the playable game because I like her so much.

I went with the same profession I did the last time, ranger.  I have to admit I’m a little weird here because I pick a ranger but I tend to get in the thick of the battle.  I just don’t know how to stay back but I don’t like how the warriors look.  What I thought was cool over the original GW is that you start with a pet.  You might have in the first Guild Wars but I don’t think so.

Ranger with pet

The graphics are amazing this time around.  Granted it’s been a long time since the release and graphics have come a long way, but WOW!  Most of what I played was simple missions, which required my pet and me.  I never did figure out how to co-op with anyone nor how to use the map in the upper right corner.  I hope this is part of the manual when the game releases.

I also was upset by the fact that the point and click movement with your mouse is gone.  I really don’t like having my hands on a keyboard the entire time it wears out my wrist.  Plus the game would lock up for half an hour or so quite a bit.  I think this was due to how many people were on the servers at once.  I just hope this is fixed by release as well.

Despite the issues, I cannot wait for the next beta weekend.

I have been a gamer for over 20 years and a writer for longer than that. I was a gamer before it was "ok" for girls to play games. My preference is RPG's over everything else but I also like fighting games, action, adventure, sims, platform, puzzle, and casual games.

I think Guild Wars 2 would be a good game. But it won't be online here. I would not try it because the ping would be a big problem if I connect the US server.Sigh...
